1. Purpose of commercialization

Painting large workpieces such as automotive bodies requires a robot with an extended maximum reach. Conventional six-axis robots face a trade-off: increasing the reach requires longer arm lengths, which can make it difficult to maintain an optimal posture when painting areas close to the robot. In addition, the longer arms increase the risk of interference with surrounding equipment, such as paint booth walls located behind the robot. Although adding an additional axis can help address these challenges, conventional 7-axis configurations often result in more complex robot operation and programming.

The MOTOMAN-PA3050HB overcomes these limitations through a unique 7-axis design featuring an additional articulation axis in the upper arm. Combined with the largest‑in‑class reach 3050 mm among painting robots, this proprietary architecture optimizes the balance of each arm segment while maintaining a level of operability comparable to that of a conventional 6-axis robot. The additional axis enables the robot to flexibly adjust its arm configuration, allowing it to maintain optimal painting postures for areas close to the robot while avoiding interference with surrounding equipment, including paint booth structures.

Furthermore, the adoption of the YRC1000 robot controller provides advanced functionality

and outstanding performance for paint process automation, helping customers improve productivity while ensuring consistent paint quality.

2. Main Features

(1) Unique axial structure for enhanced accessibility

By offsetting the 1-2 axis (S-L axis) by 500 mm, excellent accessibility is demonstrated even when the manipulator is installed high above the workpiece. Furthermore, the “redundant axis” bending structure added to the U-arm provides greater freedom of movement, minimizing interference during painting.

(2) Wider motion range and space-saving

This painting robot features an industry-leading long reach of 3050 mm, further enhancing its adaptability to paint booth applications. The extended reach enables more compact robot layouts, helping manufacturers reduce installation space requirements. By supporting smaller paint booth footprints, the robot contributes to lower CO₂ emissions associated with booth air-conditioning systems while also reducing operating costs. To provide greater production-line flexibility, the manipulator is available in two configurations that support symmetrical left- and right-side installations. The robot is optimized for painting large workpieces such as automotive bodies and bumpers.

(3) Advanced control of painting equipment

The high-performance YRC1000 robot controller enables advanced, integrated control of painting equipment. Dedicated painting functions allow key process parameters, including paint flow rate, electrostatic voltage, and air settings, to be directly controlled through the robot program.

3. Main applications

Painting of large workpieces such as automotive bodies and bumpers
